If elected your State Senator, I will work to achieve the following goals:
Using Business Experience to Create Louisiana Jobs - To positively affect our local economy we have to attract and hold business in our Parish.
Our region enjoys several distinct advantages and, if promoted correctly, can be used to create new and better jobs for our area. As your State Senator, I will work with our regional delegation as well as state and federal officials to create a short-term and long-term strategy to use our regional advantages to create jobs. If we work together and start immediately, our area can become the economic engine to fuel new job growth for our great state
Investing in Flood Protection and Infrastructure Needs - In order to have a high degree of confidence that we will not flood again we need to have a flood control design that is based upon three layers of defense; storm surge protection (levees and flood control structures), internal drainage, and coastal restoration. Each layer of defense is equally as important as the next, and each will take time and hard work to implement.
There is no quick fix to this , if we are disciplined and have strong representation we can begin really to strengthen our defenses. On all levels Projects such as the West Return Wall, the Elevation of Lakefront Levees, and the two Pump to the River Projects will go a long way to ensure our safety, but that is just the beginning of what I will work to get accomplished.
Making Our Streets Safe from Criminals - The safety of our community is one of the main reasons that people choose to live in our Parish and to raise their families here. I have devoted my time, as a member of the Metropolitan Crime Commission to help make Jefferson Parish safer for our families. As Senator, I will work to make our streets ever safer from criminals by; giving law enforcement the crime fighting technology they need, keeping career criminals behind bars where they belong, implementing a zero tolerance policy against gang violence, toughening penalties for drug dealers who prey on our kids and increasing drug education efforts to keep kids off drugs
Fighting to Protect Our Homestead Exemption - Home ownership is one of the cornerstones of our democracy. Historically one of the greatest threats to home ownership has been out of control taxation by government.
Louisiana has made a statement that it will not tolerate its citizens being forced to choose between paying taxes and losing their home. I absolutely endorse this concept and will do whatever is necessary to ensure that property taxes are kept in check through the homestead exemption.
Redirecting Educational Dollars into the Classroom - Louisiana has one of the smallest populations in the South and yet invests incredible amounts of tax money in all phases of education and workforce training. For instance we have nearly double the number of higher education institutions than competing states, consequently our campuses are in poor condition, and our students suffer. A great test is taking place in New Orleans. We now have charter schools in direct completion with traditional public schools.
Through this program, we see school performance increasing dramatically. The major reason is that the monies that are being spent at these new institutions are being spent in the classroom, thus directly impacting the student. Concentrating resources where they will have the most powerful impact is crucial. As your Senator, I will work hard to ensure this happens.
Protecting Life, Protecting Marriage and Our Values - We have seen a disheartening decline in moral values in our country. In the name of "political correctness" our leaders have become afraid to lead. It is very simple in my mind.Human life is paramount above all of our principles. The threat of or the taking of another's life is a blow not only against that person but also against our entire society.
Marriage is between a man and a woman. That is no other form of marriage. The nuclear family is the backbone of our society. Responsibility for the family and offspring must be held to the highest level of sanctity. Assets of the family must be conserved and passed on from generation to generation. Discipline, character, ethics, morals. These are not just words. They are the time worn principles that have led us to form the greatest nation in history. We must carefully pass these principles on to our children. We must live by them so that these children understand that we believe in their importance. It is through example that we must lead.
